UFC 110 Fight Review

by James on February 21, 2010 127 views to the Head

Ok fight fans, UFC 110 is now over and we were treated to another amazing night of fights. Cain Velasquez sent a huge message to the other fighters in the heavy weight division and put them on notice that he is a serious contender for the a shot a the heavyweight title. Wanderlei Silve proved again why he belongs in  the UFC with a unanimous victory over the Brit superstar Michael Bisping. George Sotiropolos put on a grappling clinic against Joe Stevenson. Rayn Bader stays undefeated against Greg Jackson’s fighter Keith Jardine. Cro Cop just put on a beating on Anthony Perosh who took this fight on 2 days notice. One of the prelim fights featured Stephan Bonner vs Krzysztof Soszywski was instant classic. They had an amazing back and fourth fight until a accidental head but cut Bonner and the fight had to be stopped. One of the best fights on this fight card. There is a lot of action so lets get to it.

CRO COP VS ANTHONY PEROSH

Anthony Perosh was a last minute replacement for the ill Ben Rothwell. You have to give huge respect for any fighter that will take a fight last minute, much less against a fighter like Cro Cop. Now to the fight,  in round one Cro Cop came out stalking Perosh wanting to unload but Perosh keep his distance, Cro Cop did land some very nice punches. Perosh tried for a take down but Cro Cop will have none of that and stuff his attempt. Cro Cop finding his range and lands a hard left that flattened the nose of Perosh. Blood now coming from the nose, Perosh now desperate to get Cro Cop to the ground. Perosh now eating  lefts and rights from Cro Cop and he tries to find a way to get this fight to the ground.

R2. Cro Cop shutting down all Perosh’s take down attempts, forcing him to stand. Cro Cop picking him apart at this point. Perosh shoots but gets on the wrong end of the deal by landing in his guard with Cro Cop ready to go to work. Cro Cop lands a big elbow that opens up a huge cut on Perosh forehead. The cut leaking huge amounts of blood, the ref takes a time out  so the doctor could take a look at the cut. Cro Cop is shocked that Perosh want to continue. They return to action and Cro Cop goes right for the kill landing  big right hand and drops Perosh. Cro Cop stays on him dropping some devastating  bombs as the round ends. The Doc comes in a looks at the cut a stops the fight. Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic defeats Anthony Perosh by TKO Doctors stoppage R2

KEITH JARDINE VS. RYAN BADER

R1 They move to the center of the cage and both fighters take a couple of huge shot s at each other heads. The circle each other landing some shots but nothing spectacular. Half way through the first round Bader lands an over hand right and follows it up with a take down. Jardine is doing a great job of tying up Bader and not taking a lot of damage. The ref stands them up as the round comes to a close.

R2. They start out exchanging punches again Jardine finding his range and lands a hard leg kick on Bader. Bader trying to get the fight to the ground but Jardine is on  his take down defends and stuff Bader’s attempts. This goes on from most of the round Jardine landing leg kicks and exchanging punches.

R3. They start the round firing at each other, Bader tries another take down but Jardine stuffs it. Bader finally gets a take down but Jardine stands right back up. Then from out of nowhere Bader lands a big right hand that rocks Jardine. Bader goes for the kill with a flying knee that just missed Jardine head and landed some where around his shoulder. Jardine is pushed up against the cage where Bader lands a big left that but the nail in the coffin for Jardine. Jardine’s lights are on but one is home. Ryan Bader defeats Keith Jardine by KO  at 2:10 R3.

JOE STEVENSON VS. GEORGE SOTIROPOULOS

R1. George starts out the fight dominating Stevenson with punches. Stevenson having enough of that goes for a take down but ends up on the bottom. George trying to pass guard with no success stands up and fires at Stevenson while he ‘s on the ground. Stevenson lands a huge up kick that I thought almost ended the fight. George goes back to the ground and working on Stevenson and passes his guard. George not really doing damage to Stevenson but he has complete control of his on the ground. As the round ends George goes for a armbar and almost has it but releases it and moves back to mount.

R2. Let me tell ya fight fans there is so much action going on in this fight I can’t even  describe it. The transitions on the ground are sick and so many I can’t even count them all. George is just picking Stevenson apart. It seems like  Stevenson didn’t show up to fight, he showed up to spar or have a lite workout. Mean while George is whippin his ass. Stevenson finally scores a take down but does nothing with it as George sweeps him and ends up on top. They move back to there feet but Stevenson takes him back down again. Stevenson getting out classed on the ground as George schools him on ground defense and submission attempts. The round ends with Stevenson barley surviving an Anaconda choke from George.

R3. Again they come out trading punches with George getting in the better shots. George gets a take down and ends up in a  guillotine choke. George works his way out and back to there feet. Stevenson finally gets a big take down and stand to rain down punches on George but ends up eating  the bottom of George’s foot. They move back to there feet where George is just domination Stevenson. Stevenson get another take down but does nothing with it as the round ends.
George Sotiropoulos defeats Joe Stevenson by Unanimous Decision.

WANDERLEI SILVA VS. MICHAEL BISPING

The round starts off kinda slow both fighter show respect to each other. Bisping gets a couple of take downs early but Silva is right back to his feet. They start to trade punches in the center of octagon both fighters landing some nice shots. Bisping scores another take down but Silva is right back up. Silva starts in on Bisping with nice very hard leg kicks and then a huge right hand. Silva stuffs a take down from Bisping and end the round with a flurry of punches and one big right hand.

R2. They move to the center of the octagon and exchange punches with Silva getting the better of Bisping. Silva catches one of Bisping’s kicks and sweeps his leg and plant him on the mat. Silva moves in and ground and pounds on him for a while then stands back up. Bisping on the receiving end of Silva’s right hand shoot in for a take down and land in side control. Again doing nothing with it Silva is right back to his feet. Bisping shoots again this time Silva catches his in a deep guillotine choke. Bisping wants to tap but there is only seconds left and he holds on till the bell sounds. Bisping stands and walks to his corner and asked if the fight was over not knowing he was saved by the bell.

R3. Silva comes out firing at Bisping and Bisping returning fire as well. They trade back and fourth for a while then Bisping kicks Silva right in the beans. The ref stops the fight to give Silva a short rest. They exchange more punches and Silva is taunting Bisping just a little but the crowd seems to love it. As they exchange punches Silva receives a thumb to the eyes and again action stops for a short rest. Back to action Silva turning it up a notch and unloading on Bisping. Silva catches another kick from Bispimg and dumps him on the mat. Silva pours it on and a last second flurry lands a big right hand and drops Bisping. Silva moves in for the kill and drops a few punches but the round ends, saving Bisping again.Wanderlei Silva defeats Michael Bisping by Unanimous Decision.

ANTONIO RODRIGO NOGUEIRA VS. CAIN VELASQUEZ

R1.Velasquez start out very strong and very aggressive landing some nice punches and very hard leg kicks. Big Nog is getting his chin tested early with some big punches from Velasquez. About two minutes into the first round Big Nog throws a big over hand right and gets caught by a huge right hook and then a left hook that drops Big Nog to the canvas. And I believe the Bonner/Soszynski fight should be deemed a No Contest as the cut was due to a clash of heads….Bonner should not be given a loss on his record.(This is where instant replay would come in handy)

You are right it should be a no contest. Did you read my post MMA rules way to victory? I have email the NSAC and ask why the Thiago Swick fight was rulesd a submission when the rules clearly state a submission is a Fighter admitting defeat and a TKO is a fighter going unconscious from a grapplin hold. Well the NSAC did not give me a direct answer But agree it did not fall into a neat category. The same thing applys hear.Which is BS. I will be doing a follow up post on this issue so look for it soon.

We saw a torch passed in the heavyweight division. You think the Axe Murderer gets his desired shot at Silva for the 185 lb. strap.

I belive your right the torch was passed last night. I think Lesner, Mir and Carwin had better pay close attention to Velasquez. I think Silva is in line for a shot at the title. I’m not so sure it will be against Anderson Silva but you never know.

Great night of fights!! Wow did The dean of mean ever look like hes been left behind. Darth just destroyed him all over the cage. I say not enough leg kicks for Jardine to mount any kind of attack, Bader controlled almost all exchanges and looked comforable doing so. Oh and WAKE UP UFC , WAKE UP! The rules are clear and concise in seperating TKO’s KO’s SUB’s and Dec’s, and the round should be a non issue, WAKE UP!!! I’m with BAM too and the Bader fight, like BAM I cheer for Soszynski but a head butt is a head butt, get it right. Great fights though loved the Axe murderer and Velasquez they really made it a great card.

Overeem is the strikforce heavyweight champ but he has been fighting in a lot of the overseas promotions (UFC would never allow that) he has a fight with Fedor coming up soon I believe

Overeem has already been beaten badly by Shogun twice, I’m not so sure White needs him right now.

Oh I don’t know, seems like there’d be several interesting match-ups depending on weight class…

Ah well, fantasy for now, anyway.
