Strikeforce:Evolution Fight Recap

by James on December 20, 2009 106 views to the Head

Ok fight fans, if you missed Strikeforce:Evolution Statuary night you missed spectacular fight card. Josh Thomson and Gilbert Melendez put on one of the greatest 5 round wars the MMA world has ever seen. Cung Le put on a spinning back kick clinic on Scott Smith.

Strikeforce ended 2009 with a bang. It was great to see Cung Le back in the cage after being gone 21 months. Strikeforce made a big impression on the fans with outstanding performances. Strikrforce is on the rise and look for good things from them in 2010.

My Strikeforce picks were horrible and I got all four fights on the main card wrong.  So next time I write my predictions pick the other guy and you should hit gold. Hope you enjoyed the fights, I know I did.

King mo Lawal vs. Mike Whitehead

R1. They move to the center of the cage and Whitehead pushing the action, landing some nice leg kicks on King Mo and working his jab. King Mo acting very cocky standing in front of Whitehead with his hands at his side. Showing Whitehead no respect and landing some nice punches in the process. About 3 minutes into the first round King Mo connect with a big right hand and drops Whitehead. Mo moves in on top of him and start unloading. He connects with two big right hands and completely knocks out Whitehead.

The winner: King mo Lawal by KO 3:08 in R1.

Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza vs. Matt Lindland

They feel each other out with punches. Souza landing some nice strikes that causes Lindland to rush in for a takedown. On the ground, Souza attempts an armbar, but Lindland scrambles out and moves for an umaplata. Souza escapes the attempted submission and catches Lindland with  arm triangle choke and that’s it for Linland game over.

The winner:Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza by arm triangle 4:16 R1

Josh Thomson vs. Gilbert Melendez

This fight went all five rounds I not even going to attempt to describe all the action that went on in this fight. The went back and fourth all five rounds  and at some points they would just stand in front of each other and swing. Josh Thomson won the first round and won the last round but Melendez won 2,3,4 hands down. I’m sure Showtime will re-air this fight or it will end up on youtube. Make sure you see it, then you will know what I’m talking about.

The winner: Gilbert Melendez by decision

Cung Le vs Scott Smith

R1.Smith comes out and tries to land some punches right from then start, but Cung Le showed his vicious kicks. Cung lands a spinning back kick that bounces Smith off the cage and drops him to the mat. Cung moves in, dropping hammer fists. Somehow, Smith survives and gets back to his feet. Smith keeps trying to land some punches win no success. Cung Le land another spinning back kick and again drops Smith. They have a small exchange to end the round.

R2. Smith eating a steady diet of Cung Le kicks. He ends up taking another spinning back kick that drops Smith again. Cung Le moves in, but Smith gets a hold of Cung Le’s wrist and holds on for dear life because he knows what’s going to happen if he lets go. The ref stands them back up and the action continues. The exchange a few punches and clinch against the cage as the round ends.

R3. Cung Le comes out just teeing off on Smith, landing spinning back kicks. Cung Le lands a nice head kick, then lands a nice spinning back fist. Smith has taken a ton of damage and I don’t even know how he is standing. Cung Le scores a take down, but Smith gets back up. Near the end of the round, Smith connects with a short left hook and staggers Cung Le. Cung Le tries to recover, only to get caught again and drop to the mat with Smith right on him. He lands a few more strikes before the ref pulls him off. Scott Smith pulls of the impossible and knocks out Cung Le with only a few minutes to go in the round.

The Winner: Scott Smith by TKO 3:35 in R3

Goes to show a fights not over till it’s officially over. That scenerio was a little similiar int he Ratcliff vs Cerone fight, in which Cerone had to pull it off in the 3rd because off the 2 point deduction for the low knees. Nobody’s perfect forever!

I knew Smith would pull this out, now next on the chopping block for Striekforce failure…. Fedor losing… to who I don’t know, but anyone would be fine at this point.
