On Saturday night MMA fans were treated to another free mixed martial arts event with the premier of Strikeforce on Showtime, not only was the entire night of fights free it was commercial free too. As my anticipation built throughout the day for the Strikeforce event which featured Frank Shamrock and Nick Diaz in a catch weight match, I was curious how this entire night of fights would go. With Affliction quickly running out of money and Elite XC dead and buried Strikeforce on Showtime if done right could gain a tremendous following, and the fight card seemed to be one that would deliver.
With Frank Shamrock on the card against Nick Diaz the hype and promotion for the first Strikeforce on Showtime event was more than plenty. There were excellent fighters like Gilbert Milendez, Benji Rodach and Scott Smith on the card as well, all fighters that typically deliver exciting mma fights that usually end in brutal knockouts or nasty submissions. Another exciting fight on the card was a fight between two female mma fighters one of which is Cris Cyborg Santos who would potentially challenge Gina Corano if she pulled off the victory.
Strikeforce had an excellent card setup as many other MMA organizations have in the past, many of those organizations even with excellent fight cards still could not overcome the technical side of putting on a mixed martial arts event. In my opinion the only orginazation that has figured out the right technical aspect of putting on an MMA event is the UFC. Dana White and crew have yet to put on MMA events with rediculous long drawn out fighter entries and terrible fight commentary, the original Elite XC has the worst entries ever and Tito Ortiz will always have my vote for worst commentator and interviewer thanks to his showing at the Affliction event that featured Fedor vs Andre Arlovski. Strikeforce and Showtime put on an excellent show in high definition without the pathetic side show act that so many other fight organizations choose to do. The fight calling was crisp and aside from being professional they also included some excellent instructional information about the fight game itself, without making it long and drawn out like Elite XC did on the CBS shows. I am looking forward to the next Strikeforce on Showtime and I am excited about the quality of the show itself, Strikeforce completes an area of MMA that needed to be completed, giving true MMA fans anothr quality organization to watch and consider serious in MMA.
