by James on August 12, 2009 138 views to the Head

Rockstar Energy Drink and Strikeforce present Carano vs. Cyborg on Saturday August 15, 2009,  at the HP Pavilion at San Jose CA. Live on Showtime Sports  starting at 10:30pm ET.

This fight between Carano and Cyborg has been a long time coming. Finally, all the talk is over and now we get to see the best two female fighters go at  it. I am very excited to see this fight and it is the Main Event. I was worried that this fight card would not happen with all the injures that took place. It has turned out to be a great fight card with the potential for lots of action. You can also check out Extremejohn.com for more predictions.

Main card

*Gina “Conviction” Carano (7-0) vs. Cris “Cyborg” (7-1)

This is going to be the greatest 145 pound Women’s Championship bout ever. Both these girls are deadly strikers and both can finish fights. Fireworks are going to happen in the cage. I am a huge fan of Carano and she is going to have to bring her A+ game, if she plans on winning. I am torn between the two, but I’m am going to call it and say Cyborg wins.

My pick: Cris “Cyborg”

RESULTS: Cyborg wins with strikes at the end of the first round.

*Jesse Taylor (13-3) vs. Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron (17-4)

(out of the fight) Nick “Bad Boy Diaz (20-7)

Strikeforce’s first ever Welterweight Championship bout with Diaz and Hieron was going to be crazy. These guy were both very good on the ground and can stand with the best of them. Both fighters were on a five fight winning streak. Diaz’s last fight was against Scott “hands of steel “ Smith, where Diaz submitted him in the third with a rear naked choke. Daiz has really stepped up his game and has some impressive wins under his belt. Jay has been training at Extreme Couture for years and if there is anyone you want in your corner that would be Randy Couture.

Then Nick decided he was not going to fail a drug test, so he just didn’t show up for it. Nick has a license to use medical marijuana in California. In the state it is legal, but it is still on the banned list. Nick decided  not be tested so he would not be fined or suspended. He has been replaced with Jesse Taylor witch you may know from TUF where he was kicked off the show for his out of control actions due to alcohol. Jesse has turned his life around and is taking his training serious and has stopped drinking. He is on a seven fight win streak with two wins in July. I don’t think Jesse has the skills yet to take Hieron, but we shall see.

My pick : Jay “The Thoroughbred” Hieron

*Renato “Babalu” Sobral (35-8) vs. Gegard Mousasi (25-2-1)

This Light Heavyweight Championship Bout is going to be war. I like they way Babalu has been  in his last few fights, he seems to be on his game.  His last fight was with Sokoudjou where he easily choked him out in the second round. He will have to be on his game if he wants to beat Mousasi, who is on a twelve fight win streak. Mousasi destroyed Mark Hunt in his last fight with a 1st round armbar. This should be a great fight, they stack up well on paper, but will they bring in to the cage?

My pick: Renato “Babalu” Sobral

RESULTS:Mousasi wins a minute and one second in, with a knock out.

Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez (15-2) vs. Mitsuhiro Ishida (18-5-1)

Melendez defends his Lightweight Interim Championship Belt against Mitsuhiro Ishida, which could be fight of the night in the making. Melendez last fight was an impressive 2rd KO of Rodrigo Damn. Melendez is a hard striker and is very good on the ground. Ishida is coming of a hard loss where he suffered a 1st round KO by the hands of Mizuto Hirota, so Ishida is looking for a little redemption. I would except these two to stand in  the center if the cage and swing for the fences.

My pick: Gilbert “El Nino” Melendez

RESULTS: Melendez in third round TKO.

The under card

*Mike “Mak” Kyle (12-6-1) vs. Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum (11-4-1)

My pick: Fabricio “Vai Cavalo” Werdum

*Scott Lighty (4-0) vs. Mike Cook (7-4)

My pick: Scott Lighty

*David “Tarzan” Douglas (4-1) vs. Justin “The Silverback” Wilcox (5-3)

My pick: Justin “The Silverback” Wilcox

*James Terry (6-1) vs. Zac Bucia (2-3)

My pick: James Terry

*Isaiah Hill (4-6) vs. Alex Trevino (3-0)

My pick: Alex Trevino

Ahhh nice you went with the under card, that always helps me out because I am way too lazy to predict those fights too.

I would love it if Gina would win this fight, it feels like the month of let downs.

I hope Cyborg doesn’t mess up Carano’s pretty face, but if Carano does win she will get the respect she deserves.
