Exclusive Interview with Mike Swick

by MMA Punk on April 29, 2009 628 views to the Head

We were lucky enough to get in touch with UFC Fighter Mike “Quick” Swick and take up his time with our questions exclusively for MMA Punk!
First off, I’d like to say I’m a huge fan! Thank you for all the great fights and all hard work you put into making your fights great.

MMA Punk: How is your health?
MS: Good, I feel great!

MMA Punk: Are you injury free?
MS: Yes, I am doing good now.

MMA Punk:
How’s your training camp going?
MS: The best ever. I have been training hard for over a month and still have 7 weeks to go. I am in shape and fight ready now.

MMA Punk: Are you training any different for this fight?
MS: Yes, I am always working to improve on things.

MMA Punk: Who have you been training with?
MS: Jon Fitch, Josh Koscheck, Josh Thomson, Jake Shields, Cain Valasquez, Luke Rockhold, Paul Buentello, Davin Clark, Kyle Kingsbury, Mike Kyle, Nate James, Nate Moore, among many other talented up and comers.

MMA Punk:
What is the worst thing about training?
MS: I guess the fatigue. I push myself really hard and I guess the toughest thing to deal with is pushing through when you are exhausted.

MMA Punk: What do you like the most about training?
MS: I love sparring. Next to that, I think the best part is when its done. Its a great feeling when training is over and you know you put your session in and made big improvements.

MMA Punk: How excited are you fighting in the UFC 99 in Germany?
MS: Very Excited! This will be my 10th UFC fight.

MMA Punk: How do you think the fans will respond?
MS: Not sure. I don’t think the UFC is as available as it is here. There will be a lot of US Military Servicemen there and I know they are big fans.

MMA Punk: Do you like to go out in the crowd and hang out with the fans?
MS: Definitely! I love the fans!

MMA Punk: What is the craziest thing a fan has ever done or said to you?
MS: I don’t even know. Depends on what you mean by crazy! I have had fans tell me that I inspire them and I think that it is great to be at a place to be able to do that.

MMA Punk: How do think you match up to Ben Saunders?
MS: I think it is going to be an exciting fight. He is a tough opponent and I think someone is getting knocked out.

MMA Punk: I know you don’t want to look ahead but who would you like to fight next?
MS: If I can get a dominant and exciting win on June 13th, I would like to get a title shot. Another win would put my UFC record at 9-1 so I want a big fight.

MMA Punk: Does fighting in another country feel different them fighting in the states?
MS: Yes it is a very different experience but it is cool. I have never been to Germany so I am excited. I am actually heading to Germany in 2 days to visit some military bases.

MMA Punk:
Since the first T.U.F. show how have you evolved as a fighter?
MS: I have completely evolved in every way.

MMA Punk: Who was your childhood influences? Who did you look up to?
MS: Too many people! I did watch all the Steven Seagal movies! As far as fighters, Vanderlei Silva and Vitor Belfort were big influences.

MMA Punk: What was the defining moment when you knew you wanted to be a  mma fighter?
MS: When I first saw the UFC back in the 90’s.

MMA Punk: Who do you think is the best pound for pound fighter in all of MMA?
MS: I think right now it is GSP.

MMA Punk: If you could pick a fight to watch, what would be the dream fight?
MS: Wow, not sure. So many!

MMA Punk: If you had not found MMA, what do you think you would be doing?
MS: Military.

MMA Punk: What do you do to mentally prepare for a fight?
MS: Just try and stay focused.

MMA Punk: Before a fight, do you still get butterflies?
MS: You are always nervous when you have something on the line that you don’t want to lose. Its how you handle them thats important.

MMA Punk: In ten years, where do you think MMA or the UFC will be?
MS: There is no way to predict that. I think it will be huge though!

MMA Punk: In your down time, whats your favorite thing to do?
MS: Travel and play poker.

MMA Punk: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
MS: Being more on the business side of things. I don’t want to be in the cage at 40!

MMA Punk: Thanks for taking the time to answer the questions!

Judging from what I’ve seen off the show and the info in this article he should be wearing a title belt before the end of this decade ! Sweet reporting. What martial art styles, if any, have these guys studied and how far in them did they progress ?

Excellent interview guys, I like the relax style of it and I like hearing the more personal side of things as well as Mike’s perspective on MMA and where he feels he stands.

I am a huge Mike Swick fan and even had the pleasure of sponsoring his fight against Joe “Diesel” Riggs not too long ago. I am hoping for a huge win for Mike Swick. Thanks Mike for taking the time to talk to all of us, especially during training.
