It seems the UFC heavy weight fighters are cursed with injury and illness. Brock Lesnar is recovering from bacterial infection, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and Gabriel Gonzaga now both have a staph infection.
According to medicine.net, staph infection (Staphylococcus aureus) is a group of bacteria that can cause a multitude of diseases as a result of infection of various tissues of the body. Staph-related illness can range from mild and requiring no treatment to severe and potentially fatal.
The best way to prevent staph infection is to keep your gear clean. Wash your workout clothes after every workout. Mats should be wiped down after every workout. Wraps should be washed and gloves and pads should be dried out as quickly as possible. Never roll with someone who might have staph infection. When at the gym always wipe down a piece of equipment before and after you use it. Common sense and good hygiene is your best defense against a staph infection.
Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira is out of his heavyweight showdown with CainVelasquez at UFC 108. Nogueira and Velasquez have both agree to move the fight to UFC 110.
Velasquez will be looking to keep his undefeated record. His has been ripping up the heavy weight division with victories over heavyweights Ben Rothwell and Cheick Kongo. Nogueira is coming off a three round war with Randy Couture at UFC 102 in which he was awarded the decision, following the disappointing TKO defeat at the hands of Frank Mir.
Gabriel Gonzaga was supposed to face Junior Dos Santos at UFC 108. There is no word on whether the fight will be postponed or a replacement will be made for Gonzaga. His last fight was against Chris Tuchscherer and he destroyed him in a awesome first round TKO. Gonzaga needed a win after he was devastated by Shane Carwin with a first round TKO at UFC 96.
